Slovo
Slovo is the creation of Dave Randall, the former Faithless guitarist who also played guitar on Dido’s smash album No Angel.
The band includes the talents of Andrew Phillips (keyboards, guitar, percussion), Afua Chebueze (spoken vocals) Lucy Shaw (bass), Adura Onashile (dance, percussion) Andrea Britton (vocals) and Ami Rothenberg (drums)
Their debut album ‘Nommo’ was released in August 2002 on the Ruff Life Records label.
Randall began work on the album in 2000. Recorded in Gaza, New York City and London it features artists from across the world including the UK (Kirsty Hawkshaw), Iceland (Emiliana Torrini), the USA (Anthony DeMore), West Africa (Maezah) the Palestinian Territories, France, Finland, and Kurdistan.
Much of the album was written in what is now Kylie Minogue’s luxury penthouse. At the time it was one of South London’s many ageing warehouses occupied by a number of independent musicians.
It is an album with a strong sense of narrative and one that raises questions about many aspects of life. The single “Frank And Harry” features a mix by Gordon Williams of Lauryn Hill production fame.
Having completed the album in spring 2002, Randall turned his attention to taking the music on the road.
